Stolen Car

And I’m driving a stolen car
On a pitch black night
And I’m telling myself
I’m gonna be alright
But I ride by night
and I travel in fear
That in this darkness
I will disappear
Of course it is Stolen Car from The River and Tracks. Another precious gem for me to discover on my journey through Bruce’s amazing body of work. How I wish I could have a long work life like him. But I wasted years and years, because I did not realize I have a special gift. And now I am 55 years old and trying to catch up … But I am determined not to be bitter or waste energy on fretting about the past. I will just deal with it as Bruce has apparently dealt with all the troubles in his creative life – by working hard and giving his all.
The last verse of the song is a perfect description of a large part of my life, especially the about ten years that I spent in the wrong career. Going on, day after day, but just knowing everything is not right, just waiting for things to go terribly wrong … Living a life you vaguely suspect you should not be living, but not knowing how to change it.
As I’ve said, it is of no use to say If only I …, but I am going to allow myself just this once: If only I have known Bruce’s music all my life, I could have found the courage to make the change years and years earlier.
There, it’s done. And now on to the promised land … :)
