Wrecking ball lyrics: Death to my hometown

One does not have to know anything about history to recognize the scenes painted in this song. I can only marvel at Springsteen’s ability to paint a verbal picture.

I agree with the three-minute review on Blogness where they say it is at once the album’s angriest song and also its most jubilant. Like in most Springsteen songs the shimmer of hope is there (Now get yourself a song to sing and sing it ’til you’re done
Yeah, sing it hard and sing it well
). I also notice the recurring thought of a terrible thing happening silently, without any warning.

It is easy to imagine this song being about any terrible thing happening to anybody. Could be financial loss, could be death or illness or problems in relationships. Life’s ugly things just have the way of creeping up on us. Or maybe we just do not want to see.

But hopefully all of us have some kind of song to sing to keep from going down. Be it music, be it humour or faith or love. My wish tonight is that you will find the song that will help you to conquer your specific kind of trouble. And that you will sing it hard and sing it well. At least we have a great role model.

Thanks to Blogness on the edge of town for the picture!

Full lyrics, courtesy of www.springsteenlyrics.com:

Oh, no cannonballs did fly, no rifles cut us down
No bombs fell from the sky, no blood soaked the ground
No powder flash blinded the eye, no deathly thunder sound
But just as sure as the hand of God, they brought death to my hometown
They brought death to my hometown

No shells ripped the evening sky, no cities burning down
No armies stormed the shores for which we’d die
No dictators were crowned
I awoke from a quite night, I never heard a sound
Marauders raided in the dark and brought death to my hometown, boys
Death to my hometown

They destroyed our families’ factories and they took our homes
They left our bodies on the plains, the vultures picked our bones

So listen up, my sonny boy, be ready for when they come
For they’ll be returning sure as the rising sun
Now get yourself a song to sing and sing it ’til you’re done
Yeah, sing it hard and sing it well
Send the robber barons straight to hell
The greedy thieves who came around
And ate the flesh of everything they found
Whose crimes have gone unpunished now
Who walk the streets as free men now

Ah, they brought death to our hometown, boys
Death to our hometown, boys
Death to our hometown, boys
Death to our hometown, whoa!
